Canada’s 2025 Light Vehicle Market: Vans and Small Pickups Surge as SUVs Tighten Their Grip
In 2025, light vehicle sales varied widely by segment. Small vans led growth, up nearly 40% year over year, with every model in the segment posting gains—totaling about 43,000 units sold. Small pickups also performed strongly, increasing 33%, driven largely by the Ford Maverick (especially its hybrid version) and a rebound in Toyota Tacoma sales.
In contrast, luxury car sales dropped sharply by 46.7%, largely due to weaker Tesla Model 3 performance.
Overall market trends showed SUVs continuing to dominate. Compact SUVs became the top-selling segment with over 553,000 units sold, far ahead of large pickups at 314,000 units. Combined, subcompact, compact, and intermediate SUVs now account for more than half of all new light vehicle sales, underscoring the growing dominance of mainstream SUVs in the market.
