Canadian Used-Vehicle Market Remains Stable Despite Supply Challenges
Canada’s used-vehicle market remained relatively stable during the first half of 2026 despite continued inventory challenges. A survey from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants and the Used Car Dealers Association found that franchised dealers averaged 158 used-vehicle sales, down slightly from 163 a year earlier. Independent dealers experienced a larger decline, averaging 54 vehicles compared with 63 in the first half of 2025.
Limited supply remains a key challenge. Lower new-vehicle sales from 2021 through 2024 have reduced the number of off-lease vehicles now entering the used market, with roughly half of surveyed dealers reporting that sourcing conditions have worsened. Franchised dealers sourced nearly 68% of their used inventory directly from consumers, while independent dealers relied most heavily on auctions. For fleets, constrained used-vehicle supply could help support resale values, although economic conditions, trade policy, and future new-vehicle sales will continue to influence the Canadian remarketing market.

NHTSA Expands Investigation Into GM 6.2L V8 Engine Failures
NHTSA has opened an Engineering Analysis into continued failures of GM’s 6.2-liter L87 V8 after the automaker’s original recall remedy. The initial recall covered nearly 600,000 engines used in popular fleet vehicles including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. Engines that passed inspection were switched from 0W-20 to heavier 0W-40 oil in an effort to reduce the risk of crankshaft, connecting rod and bearing failures.
