(CANADA) Canadians Facing Rising Repair Costs and New-Car Prices, Report Finds
Canadian drivers are experiencing a "double whammy" of rising repair costs for aging vehicles and persistently high new-car prices, according to a J.D. Power Canada report. The average cost for a dealership visit rose to $465 in 2024, up 7.6% from the previous year, while independent repair shops saw costs increase to $273, up 4.2%. With inflation pushing repair costs higher and interest rates impacting large purchases, many drivers are holding onto their vehicles longer. This shift has led to a higher percentage of repair visits, with 40% of dealership visits and 24% of independent shop visits now for repairs, compared to last year's figures. Despite these challenges, the market share between dealerships and independent shops for repairs remains stable.
Gas Prices Drop for Fifth Consecutive Week, Could Fall Below $3 Per Gallon
Gasoline prices have declined for the fifth consecutive week, with the national average dropping 3 cents to $3.28 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Prices are down 51 cents compared to the same time last year, driven by seasonal trends and the upcoming switch to cheaper winter gasoline. According to Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy, prices could fall below $3 if there are no major hurricanes in the Gulf or worsening conflicts in the Middle East. Diesel prices also fell but may rise as winter approaches. As of September 2, 2024, regional prices vary, with the Gulf Coast seeing the lowest at $2.84 per gallon and the West Coast the highest at $4.10. Mississippi currently has the cheapest gas in the country at $2.84 per gallon.
