Over Labor Day weekend, national gas prices hit their lowest levels since 2020, averaging $3.15 per gallon, though prices have ticked up slightly this week. According to GasBuddy, the national average is still 13.1 cents lower than a year ago, making this summer the most affordable at the pump since 2021, with Americans spending $11.3 billion less on gasoline compared to last year.
Regional prices as of September 2 ranged from $2.77 per gallon along the Gulf Coast to $4.15 on the West Coast, with all regions seeing small week-over-week increases. Mississippi leads the nation with the cheapest average price at $2.72, followed closely by Oklahoma at $2.75 and Arkansas at $2.77. Analysts expect prices could dip further this fall, potentially reaching $2.99 per gallon, provided no major hurricanes or supply disruptions occur.
