Rising Inflation and Interest Rates Add Pressure to Vehicle Ownership Costs

Inflation and higher borrowing costs continue to challenge the automotive market heading into 2027. According to Cox Automotive's October 19 market update, consumer inflation reached 3.7% year over year in September, driven largely by rising energy prices. Gasoline prices increased 34% from a year ago, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield remained elevated near 5.1%, keeping pressure on vehicle financing costs.

Vehicle ownership expenses continue to rise, particularly maintenance and repairs, which increased 5.8% year over year and are now 65% higher than in 2018. Auto insurance provided some relief, declining 5% from last year. Meanwhile, producer prices increased 6.3% annually, suggesting businesses continue to face higher operating and production costs.

For fleets, rising fuel, maintenance, and financing expenses could significantly impact total lifecycle costs and replacement budgets. While the broader economy remains resilient, with second-quarter GDP growth revised upward to 2.2%, fleets should continue evaluating fuel efficiency, maintenance trends, financing assumptions, and replacement timing to manage operating costs heading into 2027.
