Wholesale Used-Vehicle Values Ease in August
Wholesale used-vehicle prices softened during the first half of August, continuing a typical late-summer slowdown after stronger values earlier in the year. The Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index fell 1.2% from July to 207.4 and is now essentially flat compared with August 2025. Non-adjusted prices declined 0.8% for the month and 0.2% year over year. MMR retention remained within normal seasonal ranges at 99.5%, while sales conversion improved from July but remained below last year's level.
Vehicle performance continues to vary by segment. Compact cars were the strongest, with wholesale values up 2.2% year over year, while SUVs and pickups experienced declines. EV values remain 5% above last year, supported in part by higher gasoline prices, but fell 4.2% from July as additional off-lease EV inventory entered the market. For fleets, the recent depreciation suggests remarketing conditions are normalizing. Monitoring EV values will be especially important as growing used-EV supply could put additional pressure on resale values through the remainder of the year.

Auto Insurance Rates Show Signs of Relief
Auto insurance costs are beginning to ease after several years of sharp increases. Motor vehicle insurance prices fell 4.5% year over year in July, marking the third consecutive month of declines and the largest drop since 2020. Improved insurer profitability and fewer claims are giving carriers room to reduce rates and compete for new business.
