Ford Fathom EV Pickup Could Face Production Delay
Ford’s upcoming Fathom electric pickup could face a production delay as the automaker works to bring its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform to mass production. Ford had planned to open orders and begin production in 2027, but CEO Jim Farley acknowledged that meeting cost, scale, and timing targets will be challenging. No official delay has been announced.
The Fathom is expected to start around $30,000, making affordability a key part of Ford’s strategy. The company is investing $2 billion to retool its Louisville plant and is working with new suppliers and manufacturing processes to reduce production costs. The base truck is expected to use a rear electric motor and lithium iron phosphate battery.
For fleets, the Fathom remains a potentially important lower-cost EV option, particularly for applications that do not require a full-size pickup. However, fleets considering it for 2027 replacement cycles should keep alternative vehicles in their plans until Ford confirms production timing, final pricing, range, payload, and fleet availability.
