Canadian Vehicle Market Continues Shift Toward SUVs and Trucks
Canada's new-vehicle market continued to favor SUVs and trucks during the first half of 2026, despite an overall slowdown in sales. Intermediate passenger cars posted the strongest growth, rising 24% year over year, driven largely by the Toyota Prius and Camry. Large SUVs also performed well, increasing 11.5% thanks to strong demand for models such as the Dodge Durango and Chevrolet Suburban. Meanwhile, compact SUVs and full-size pickups—the two largest fleet segments—experienced modest declines of 4.3% and 5.8%, respectively. Small vans remained one of the stronger commercial segments, finishing the first half up 9% despite softer second-quarter results.
