Wholesale Used-Vehicle Values Decline in August
The Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index finished August at 208.2, down 0.9% from July but 0.4% higher than a year ago. Depreciation slowed toward the end of the month as used retail demand strengthened. Retail days’ supply fell to 44 days, while wholesale sales conversion improved to 57.2% from July.
Vehicle age continues to play an important role in resale performance. Newer used vehicles experienced greater depreciation, while more affordable 9- and 10-year-old vehicles performed significantly better than historical averages. EV values were also 4.5% above last year, although they declined 4.7% from July. Non-EV values fell 0.9% year over year and 0.6% month over month.
For fleets, August results point to a relatively stable remarketing environment despite some near-term depreciation. Strong demand for affordable older vehicles could support fleets operating units longer, while recent EV declines reinforce the need to closely monitor EV replacement cycles and resale assumptions.
